Frequently Asked Questions
Before the Class
Who should take this class?
The Central Station Training class is designed for experienced central station supervisors interested in training operators in-house. Generally, candidates with at least some supervisory experience get the most out of the curriculum.
How do I register for the class?
You can register either online or via mail or fax by downloading a registration form. Please visit the Register Online Now section for more information.
What does my registration fee cover?
Your registration fee covers your classroom manual (shipped to you before the course begins) and all classroom materials during your training session.
What if I cannot attend a class after I register for it?
Please contact SIA directly for more information about our cancellation policy.
Can I complete the course if I do not live in the USA?
Yes; international students are welcome to attend trainings and earn their certification, and we have had students from a number of countries attend during past session. However, at this time all courses are conducted in the USA.
Is this course available online?
No, the Central Station Training class is not available online. SIA believes that the operator/instructor materials are best presented when led by an instructor in a classroom setting, as students can benefit from conversation and the methods and practices of others in attendance.
During the Class
How long is the class? What are the hours?
The class is a five day, forty-hour class; each day includes 8 hours of instruction by a certified national instructor. A typical class will run Monday – Friday from 8 AM – 5 PM with one hour for lunch; these hours may vary depending on location and instructor. Before you begin your class you will receive detailed information pertaining to your class’s hours and location.
Is lunch provided?
No, SIA does not provide meals during your training. Snacks and beverages are provided during the day.
Are there exams? How hard are they?
There are two exams during the week; you will take one for the Operator portion of the class and another for the Instructor portion of the class. The exams are designed to be challenging, although all materials covered on the exam is presented in class with time for questions and answers.
What if I don’t pass one of the exams?
If you fail either of the exams, your instructor may allow you the opportunity to review the material in a one-on-one setting and retest. This provision is at the instructor's discretion and will only be offered if time allows for an additional test to be administered.
After the Class
How do I train my operators when I return home?
You will learn a variety of techniques designed for adult learners during your class. You may use the material SIA provides and tailor it to your own central station. Some central stations train students individually; others conduct classes in their own training facilities for new hires. The process you select is entirely up to you.
Do all of my operators need training manuals?
Yes, each student you train must have their own training manual. Providing a training manual to each student allows them to have their own copy of the course material in their hands at all times.
How much do manuals cost? What does that price include?
Manuals are $69 for SIA member companies and $89 for non-member companies. The price includes a spiral-bound course manual and the cost of printing and shipping a certificate once the operator completes and passes their final exam.
How do I request a certificate for a student who has passed their exam?
To request a certificate for a student who has passed the operator exam, submit the certificate request form with a copy of the student’s graded exam. Please allow 3-4 weeks for processing and delivery.
