CSPM Program Requirements
Eligibility
Candidates applying for the CSPM credential must be currently working as a Project Manager in the Security Industry. The intent and structure of the CSPM Credential Program is known as blended learning. This leading edge approach to training blends knowledge gained through education programs with experience gained through hands-on work in the profession. Combined, knowledge and experience enrich and strengthen the depth of learning and allow candidates to apply and implement new concepts and processes with confidence and a higher-level of skill.
To be eligible to receive the designation of CSPM, a candidate must have satisfied all educational and experiential requirements established by industry experts and agree to abide by the Security Project Manager Code of Professional Conduct.
Training
There are two areas of study within the education and training component of the CSPM Credential Program. The Self-Study Program is the first area of study for each candidate. This program of study is to be completed by the candidate prior to attending the second phase of training the Classroom Series Program.
CSPM candidates will be required to successfully complete a number of educational courses covering subjects professional Project Managers must command in order to successfully manage security projects effectively. By the time they complete the full series of courses, they should understand how to manage the costs, to assure the quality and to schedule projects throughout all phases of the project lifecycle. In addition, they should have a fundamental understanding of factors affecting their projects such as stakeholders, estimating, cost control, cash flow and risk management.
Candidates applying for the CSPM Program will be required to successfully complete a 40-hour series of classroom instruction (contact hours) and 20 hours of self-study prerequisite courses.
Practical Experience
Recognizing that the application of what is learned in the classroom is the true value of certification, the CSPM Program requires candidates to demonstrate their ability to apply the skills of the professional project manager to their work prior to being certified as a Security Project Manager.
The amount of related practical experience required for certification will depend upon the level of higher education the candidate has obtained. The candidate without a Baccalaureate Degree will be required to log 4,000 hours of practical experience as a project manager, with a minimum of 1,000 hours of specific security project experience. The candidate with a Baccalaureate Degree is likely to have more refined documentation and communication skills from the outset, and will need to log 2,500 hours of hands-on experience with a minimum of 500 hours of specific security project experience.
Certification Examination
Understanding and applying the key concepts and processes of each training course will be the lifeblood of a successful Security Project Manager. The candidate who has used the tools and concepts of project management and maintained good notes will find the certification testing straightforward. The final certification examination is a supervised test containing questions from all areas of study and will cover the many aspects of the Security Project Manager Job Analysis.
Certification Credential
The CSPM Credential will be awarded to candidates once all educational and experiential requirements established by industry experts have been satisfied. The initial certification is valid for a period of 18 months. Re-certification is then required to maintain the certification. The names of all currently certified CSPMs will be listed on the SIA and EPC websites.
Code Of Conduct
In order to assure the highest degree of professionalism, the CSPM Candidate must agree to abide by the Security Project Manager Code of Professional Conduct, in addition to satisfying the educational and experiential requirements.
