Electronic Security Systems Technician (ESST)

The Electronic Security Systems Technician (ESST) program is designed to provide the basic skills necessary for alarm installers in the security industry. Security systems vary greatly in design and function. Knowing how security components function is essential to creating and installing effective systems that are correctly tailored to customer needs. ESST students are given a full education on the essential skills of being this type of technician. The ESST Program consists of two sub courses: Security & Fire Systems and Wiring Techniques.

ESST Sub course 1 – Security & Fire Systems

Security & Fire Systems gives an overview of the different types of detectors, controllers and access control systems. With this background, technicians learn how things operate at a very detailed level and thus have the knowledge to recommend the correct components in real-world situations. The course explains how common security and fire detection devices operate, their advantages/disadvantages and installation considerations. Controller functions and alarm transmission methods are also discussed. The course outline is shown below.

Module 1: Controllers
Module 2: Alarm Transmissions
Module 3: Space Detection
Module 4: Perimeter Detection
Module 5: CCTV Systems
Module 6: Access Control Systems
Module 7: Fire Technology

ESST Sub course 2: Wiring Techniques

The infrastructure of an alarm and fire system relies extensively on the wiring that is used. Wiring Techniques details the characteristics of data, voice, electrical and fiber optic cabling that is commonly used on the job. This course gives technicians the skills to correctly identify the needs of an alarm system and follow the wiring from cable selection to installation considerations. The course outline is shown below.

Module 1: Cable Types
Module 2: Cable Distribution & Grounding
Module 3: Installation Considerations
Module 4: Fiber Optics
