World of Electronic Access Control (WEAC)

Security is a $34 billion industry covering a wide array of systems and services. At the core of this is access control - the process of granting access to authorized personnel while screening out the rest. Those who work in this industry need to have an understanding of systems integration, installation guidelines and the access control components. The WEAC Program consists of a group of sub courses: Access Control Components, and Installation Guidelines. This group of sub courses provides a thorough overview of all aspects of access control systems.

WEAC Sub course 1 – Access Control Components

Access Control Components describes how the main components of an electronic access control system operate. Installation guidelines and the advantages/disadvantages of different device types and technologies are also discussed. This course allows students to get a thorough review of the different components that comprise an access control system. It is broken into four units and covers everything from door frames to database configuration. The course outline is shown below.

UNIT I: Door & Related Hardware
Module One: Doors & Frames
Module Two: Locking Devices
Module Three: Support Hardware
Module Four: Key Control
Module Five: Door Release Hardware
Module Six: Other Electric Barrier

UNIT II: Access Control Hardware
Module One: Controllers
Module Two: Credential & Reader Technology
Module Three: Annunciators

UNIT III: Technical Skills - Computer Operations
Module One: Computer Hardware
Module Two: Software Concepts

UNIT IV: System Architecture & Communications Formats
Module One: System Types & Components
Module Two: Controller Database Configurations
Module Three: Controller Communications with a Host

WEAC Sub course 2 – Installation Guidelines

Installation Guidelines covers the basics of wiring that is used in security systems and the troubleshooting techniques necessary to effectively service them. This sub course educates installers in the proper way to approach the design and installation of security systems. It also educates the sales forces who have to understand the complexity of these systems in order to successfully sell their products. Topics such as cable types/applications, cable distribution systems, fiber optics and troubleshooting procedures and equipment are included. The course outline is shown below.

UNIT I: Wiring Techniques
Module One: Cable Types
Module Two: Cable Distribution & Grounding
Module Three: Installation Considerations
Module Four: Fiber Optics
Module Five: Tools & Equipment

UNIT II: Troubleshooting Techniques
Module One: Troubleshooting Skills
Module Two: Troubleshooting Procedures
Module Three: Troubleshooting Equipment
