Alabama Assembly Resolution 121, Trade Agreements
The legislation states that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and rules put forth by the World Trade Organization (WTO) exceed rights and privileges provided by state and federal trade law. It also recommends the reform of Fast Track negotiating of trade agreements. Fast Track negotiating is a mechanism which gives the executive branch the power to sign trade agreements without the approval of Congress.
This legislation passed both chambers, and since it was a resolution it did not require the governor’s signature. There are a number of other states that have introduced or passed nearly identical resolutions. Language for the bill text came from the AFL-CIO.
